BEAT MAKER — HOW IT WORKS

Pads & Kits

Tap the 16 color-coded pads to play drums: red kicks, blue snares, yellow hi-hats, teal percussion. Or use your keyboard — Q W E R kicks, A S D F snares, Z X C V hats, 1 2 3 4 percussion. Pick from 8 kits. A small dot marks hybrid kits: 808 and Trap layer real CC0 recordings over synthesized drums, while Acoustic and Lo-Fi lean mostly on recordings. If those files cannot load, the built-in synth drums take over automatically. Clicking a pad opens the tweak panel for Pitch, Decay, Drive, Filter, and Volume.

Sequencer

Eight tabs, eight layers: Drums, Synth, Bass, FX, Chords, Arp, Vox, and Sample. Click cells to place hits and press Play — a glowing playhead sweeps the grid in time. Tabs flash when their layer makes a sound. Each tab has its own volume, Random, and Clear. The bars dropdown switches between 1, 2, and 4-bar patterns; shaded step groups and bright bar lines keep long patterns readable. Bass, Chords, and Arp are one-note-per-step; the Arp also has speed (1/4 to 1/16) and direction controls.

Velocity, Probability & Bars

Drag across steps to paint a rhythm. Turn on Velocity and tap active steps to cycle Normal, Accent, and Soft levels; turn on Probability to cycle 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% playback chance. The bar navigator jumps through long patterns, duplicates a bar, clears the active layer’s current bar, and writes quick musical fills.

Ghost & Roll (Drums)

Ghost notes are quiet hits (~40% volume, shown dimmed). Shift+click any drum cell to toggle one, or turn on Ghost mode so plain taps place them — that’s the way to do it on a phone. Roll mode turns taps into ratchets: each tap cycles a cell through ×2 → ×3 → ×4 retriggers → off (the marker in the cell corner shows the count). Rolls are the classic trap/drill hi-hat trick. While either mode is armed, its button glows and the sequencer box is outlined in lime.

Generate, Variation & Patterns

Choose a Style, Energy, and Detail, or leave Style on Surprise Me. ★ Generate quietly tries eight complete beats, keeps the strongest one, and starts playing it. It uses four bars the first time so it can make an intro, main groove, change-up, and ending fill. Variation makes small changes to the beat you already have. Turn on a Keep button to protect that part. The Patterns chips load classic drum grooves you can build on.

Banks & Song Mode

The Bank chips (A–D) hold four independent patterns that share your kit, FX, key, and tempo. ⊞ Copy duplicates the current pattern into another bank (or Shift+click a bank) — the classic verse/chorus workflow: build A, copy it to B, tweak B. Clicking a bank while the beat plays queues it for the end of the pattern, just like hardware drum machines. Hit ▶ Song to play the banks in a chain: build it with +A +B… (or let the button auto-chain your non-empty banks) and click a chain chip to remove it. While the song plays the button becomes ■ Stop; the plain Play button always loops just the current bank. Once a chain exists, Export WAV renders the whole song front to back.

Transport

Play (or Space) starts the loop. Drag BPM 60–200 or tap the Tap button in rhythm to set the tempo. Swing delays the off-beats for shuffle feel. Vol is the master level, and the green trace next to Play is a live oscilloscope of the output.

FX, Pump, Key & Scale

Verb adds space (synthesized reverb), Delay is a tempo-synced dotted-eighth echo, and Sat adds analog-style grit. Pump is sidechain compression: every kick briefly ducks the melodic layers for that pumping house/EDM feel. The Key and Scale selectors re-pitch the Synth, Bass, Arp, Vox, and Chords — the chord rows automatically become the correct chords for your key (try a minor or Phrygian scale for darker beats).

Mixer & Sound Shaping

Open More for the 8-track mixer: every layer has volume, mute, solo, pan, reverb send, delay send, and a live peak meter. Mix presets adapt the balance to hip-hop, club, lo-fi, ambient, or neutral production. Synth macros control Tone, Punch, Length, and Width. Kick Tune, Match Root, Bass Root Lock, and Pump Depth/Release keep the low end working together.

Sampler

On the Sample tab, record from your microphone or upload an audio file into up to 8 slots. Each sample gets its own color-coded strip with 8 pitch rows. Edit tools: Trim (drag the handles), Auto Trim (cuts silence), Rev (reverse), ½x / 2x (speed), and Norm (normalize level).

Recording

● Rec captures a live performance — every pad tap and sequencer hit with exact timing. Recordings appear in the panel below the pads where you can replay, download as WAV, or delete them.

Save, Share & Export

Your beat autosaves in this browser every few seconds and comes back when you return. Save keeps named beats you can reload from the dropdown. 🔗 Share opens a share menu for the beat. Export can render the current pattern or full arrangement, optionally normalize the result, or download separate layer stems. Note: mic/uploaded samples stay on your device and aren’t included in saved or shared beat data.

Shortcuts

About the Beat Maker

The ButtonBass Beat Maker is a free online drum machine with 16 drum pads, a multi-bar drum sequencer, and synth instrument layers. Four kits blend compact CC0 drum recordings with real-time Web Audio synthesis: 808 and Trap use samples for extra attack, while Acoustic and Lo-Fi lean more heavily on recorded drums. The other kits remain fully synthesized, and every sampled sound has a built-in synthesized fallback. Choose from eight kits (808, Trap, Acoustic, Lo-Fi, Industrial, Jungle, Reggaeton, Minimal), tap pads or use your keyboard, then build patterns and hear them loop.

Adjust BPM from 60 to 200, dial in swing for a shuffle feel, and record your performance to play back later. The entire app runs in the browser with no sign-up, no download, and no time limit.

How to Make Beats

Tap any of the 16 pads to trigger a drum sound. Each pad is color-coded: red for kicks, blue for snares, yellow for hi-hats, and teal for percussion. Use your keyboard for faster playing — Q/W/E/R trigger kicks, A/S/D/F trigger snares, Z/X/C/V trigger hi-hats, and 1/2/3/4 trigger percussion.

Click cells in the step sequencer to place hits, then press Play. A green playhead sweeps across 16 steps in time with your BPM, playing each active cell. Hit Random to generate a pattern automatically — the generator picks from four beat styles (straight, trap, halftime, breakbeat) and applies musical rules so the result sounds like a real drum pattern.

Synth Sequencer

Switch to the Synth tab to add melodic notes to your beat. The synth sequencer has 8 rows covering one octave (C through C). Choose from four waveforms (sine, triangle, sawtooth, square), adjust the octave up or down, and dial in attack and release times to shape your sound. The synth plays simultaneously with the drum sequencer, so you can build complete tracks with both rhythm and melody.

Recording

Hit Rec to start recording. The recorder captures both pad taps and sequencer playback — every sound that fires while recording is saved with precise timing. Stop recording and your session appears in the Recordings panel where you can play it back or delete it.
