HIP HOP BEAT MAKER — HOW IT WORKS

Pads & Kits

Tap the 16 color-coded pads to play drums: red 808s & kicks, purple snares & claps, gold hi-hats, teal percussion. Or use your keyboard — Q W E R kicks, A S D F snares, Z X C V hats, 1 2 3 4 percussion. Pick from 8 hip hop kits (Trap, Boom Bap, Drill, West Coast, Memphis, Dirty South, Lo-Fi, Old School). Clicking a pad also opens the tweak panel where you can shape its Pitch, Decay, Drive, Filter, and Volume.

Sequencer

Eight tabs, eight layers: Drums, Synth, Bass, FX, Chords, Arp, Vox, and Sample. Click cells to place hits and press Play — a glowing playhead sweeps the grid in time. Tabs flash when their layer makes a sound. Each tab has its own volume, Random, and Clear. The bars dropdown switches between 1, 2, and 4-bar patterns; shaded step groups and bright bar lines keep long patterns readable. Bass, Chords, and Arp are one-note-per-step; the Arp also has speed (1/4 to 1/16) and direction controls.

Ghost & Roll (Drums)

Ghost notes are quiet hits (~40% volume, shown dimmed). Shift+click any drum cell to toggle one, or turn on Ghost mode so plain taps place them — that’s the way to do it on a phone. Roll mode turns taps into ratchets: each tap cycles a cell through ×2 → ×3 → ×4 retriggers → off (the marker in the cell corner shows the count). Rolls are the classic trap/drill hi-hat trick. While either mode is armed, its button glows and the sequencer box is outlined in lime.

Generate & Patterns

The ★ Generate button writes a complete beat across every layer — drums, 808 bass, chords, melody, and more — in one of 14 hip hop styles (boom bap, trap, drill, G-funk, Memphis, phonk, lo-fi, jazz rap…) and starts playing it. Trap-family styles get hat rolls automatically. The Patterns chips load classic one-bar hip hop grooves you can build on.

Banks & Song Mode

The Bank chips (A–D) hold four independent patterns that share your kit, FX, key, and tempo. ⊞ Copy duplicates the current pattern into another bank (or Shift+click a bank) — the classic verse/chorus workflow: build A, copy it to B, tweak B. Clicking a bank while the beat plays queues it for the end of the pattern, just like hardware drum machines. Hit ▶ Song to play the banks in a chain: build it with +A +B… (or let the button auto-chain your non-empty banks) and click a chain chip to remove it. While the song plays the button becomes ■ Stop; the plain Play button always loops just the current bank. Once a chain exists, Export WAV renders the whole song front to back.

Transport

Play (or Space) starts the loop. Drag BPM 60–200 or tap the Tap button in rhythm to set the tempo. Swing delays the off-beats for shuffle feel. Vol is the master level, and the green trace next to Play is a live oscilloscope of the output.

FX, Pump, Key & Scale

Verb adds space (synthesized reverb), Delay is a tempo-synced dotted-eighth echo, and Sat adds analog-style grit — push it for that saturated boom bap knock. Pump is sidechain compression: every kick briefly ducks the melodic layers. The Key and Scale selectors re-pitch the Synth, Bass, Arp, Vox, and Chords — the chord rows automatically become the correct chords for your key (minor and Phrygian are the go-to scales for dark trap and drill).

Mute

The colored Mute chips silence individual layers — great for A/B-ing a Generate result. Muted layers’ tabs dim with a strikethrough and stop flashing.

Sampler

On the Sample tab, record from your microphone or upload an audio file into up to 8 slots. Each sample gets its own color-coded strip with 8 pitch rows. Edit tools: Trim (drag the handles), Auto Trim (cuts silence), Rev (reverse), ½x / 2x (speed), and Norm (normalize level).

Recording

● Rec captures a live performance — every pad tap and sequencer hit with exact timing. Recordings appear in the panel below the pads where you can replay, download as WAV, or delete them.

Save, Share & Export

Your beat autosaves in this browser every few seconds and comes back when you return. Save keeps named beats you can reload from the dropdown. 🔗 Share opens a share menu with a URL containing the entire beat — grids, kit, BPM, FX, key, rolls — that you can copy or send straight to another app; it opens the beat for anyone. ⬇ Export WAV renders the loop (with all FX and pump) to an audio file. Note: mic/uploaded samples stay on your device — they aren’t included in saves or share links.

Shortcuts

Space play/stop · Ctrl+Z undo (any layer, incl. Generate & Clear All) · Shift+click ghost note · Shift+click a bank to copy into it · ? this help · Esc close help · letter keys play pads.

About the Hip Hop Beat Maker

The ButtonBass Hip Hop Beat Maker is a free online drum machine built for hip hop: booming 808 kicks with pitch glide and saturation, cracking trap snares, finger snaps, big claps, and crisp rolling hi-hats. Every sound is synthesized in real time using the Web Audio API — there are no audio files to download. Choose from eight hip hop kits (Trap, Boom Bap, Drill, West Coast, Memphis, Dirty South, Lo-Fi, Old School), tap pads or use your keyboard to trigger sounds, then build patterns on the step sequencer and hear them loop.

Layer 808 bass lines, Rhodes and piano chords, dark keys, whistle leads, strings, and hip hop sound effects (air horn, turntable scratch, vinyl crackle, tape stop) on the other sequencer tabs. Adjust BPM from 60 to 200, dial in swing for that MPC shuffle, and record or export your beat as a WAV. The entire app runs in the browser with no sign-up, no download, and no time limit.

How to Make Hip Hop Beats

Start with the drums. Put an 808 on beat 1 of the step sequencer, a snare or clap on beats 2 and 4 (or just beat 3 for a half-time Dirty South bounce), and fill the hi-hat row. Each pad is color-coded: red for 808s and kicks, purple for snares and claps, gold for hi-hats, and teal for percussion. Use your keyboard for faster playing — Q/W/E/R trigger kicks, A/S/D/F trigger snares, Z/X/C/V trigger hi-hats, and 1/2/3/4 trigger percussion.

Turn on Roll mode and tap hat steps to add ×2/×3/×4 hi-hat rolls — the signature trap and drill move. Then get the tempo right for the style: boom bap lives around 90 BPM with 30–45% swing, trap and drill around 140 BPM straight, Dirty South around 70 BPM. Or hit ★ Generate and the beat maker writes a complete beat — drums, 808 bass, chords, and melody — in one of 14 hip hop styles.

808 Bass, Keys & Chords

Switch to the Bass tab and pick 808 Glide for saturated sub bass that slides into each note, or Moog for warmer G-funk lines. The Synth tab has hip hop instruments — piano, Rhodes, dark keys, music box, G-funk whistle, flute, brass, and strings — and the Chords tab drops full Rhodes or string chords that always fit your key. Set the scale to minor or Phrygian for dark trap and drill moods.

Recording

Hit Rec to start recording. The recorder captures both pad taps and sequencer playback — every sound that fires while recording is saved with precise timing. Stop recording and your session appears in the Recordings panel where you can play it back, download it, or delete it.
